In ZENA, the land populated by only women, MAHILA and her best friend NIGLA attain the age of fertilization at TWENTY and are thrilled at being released from their sheltered lives and hunting for the seed-men for their future offspring – a rite that can be performed only once in the lifetime of a ZENAI – a citizen of ZENA. At the same time, ZENAXA the priestess of the deity XA, and leader of Zena has almost concluded her decade-long reign and must begin the search for the next Zenaxa from among the Zenai who have reached the age of fertilization.
After a successful hunt, Mahila, Nigla and their peers capture through wile and cunning, a sufficient number of young men and imprison them as they prepare excitedly for their fertilization ceremony and offer prayers to XA that they will be among the lucky ones to be fertilized during this once in a lifetime rite. During Mahila’s guard duty over the seed-men, she is drawn into a conversation and subsequently develops feelings for LOIK, a rugged, medallion-wearing, tattooed Blacksmith from Alka-Across-The-River.
On the day of fertilization, Mahila ensures that she is paired with Loik and despite himself and his escape plans, Loik mates with Mahila. Subsequently, Mahila helps Loik escape the castration rite which is meted out to all the seed-men as it’s a taboo for a seed-man to fertilize more than one Zenai in his lifetime. Loik and the seed-men are released after the castration.
A few months later, Loik orchestrates a meeting with a fertilized Mahila where he begs her to flee Zena with him. When Mahila refuses, Loik asks her if she has ever wondered what happens to male babies in Zena and Mahila is forced to question some of the practices perpetrated by her clan and starts to toy with the thought of leaving Zena, but not without Nigla.
Nigla’s refusal to accede to Mahila’s plan comes back to haunt her as birthing day dawns and she births a male child. Now certain of a cruel fate for her son, Nigla persuades Mahila to flee with Loik’s help and with their babies in tow. Before the plan takes flight, exciting news filters through Zena- a new Zenaxa has been chosen and it is Nigla. Nigla is immediately taken away wailing for her crowning rites and separated from her male baby- who like other male babies is doomed for cremation, as a sacrifice to XA – it is a taboo also for a Zenai to be fertilized by the child of another Zenai.
Will Mahila continue with her escape plans without Nigla? Will Nigla’s crowning as Zenaxa alter her views? Will Mahila and Mahila’s child ever be allowed to leave Zena to build a home with Loik? Will Nigla be crowned in time to save Nigla’s baby and other unfortunate male babies?
